Skippers Morgan and Alex Kiss led Black River
High School to its first MISSA regatta win by outlasting Loyola
Academy cousins Davis and Clifford Porter at the Jimmy Talbot Memorial
Regatta. Hosted by Chicago Yacht Club's Belmont Harbor Station,
the Talbot Regatta is a tribute to the late Chicago Yacht Club Sailing
School instructor Jimmy Talbot. Competing in HS420's, sailors represented
high schools from five states including Illinois, Indiana, Michigan,
Ohio, and Wisconsin. Warm southerly winds ranged from 7 to 15 knots
on Saturday and 10 to 30 knots on Sunday.
Nineteen teams competed in an A and B division round robin format.
Black River High School from Holland, Michigan took the team title
by finishing first and second in A and B divisions, respectively.
Freshman skipper Morgan Kiss with crew Aaron Parach and the B division
team of Alex Kiss/Chloe Beighley were followed by the Loyola "A"
team of Clifford Porter/Marie Ortino and "B" team of Davis
Porter/ Juliann Sargis. Grosse Pointe South's Ian Hollerbach/Sammy
Barbour and Brooke Lyon/Spencer Colparte took third. New Trier's
team of co-captains Matt Kopecki/Colleen Cozzens with Charlie Hall/Joey
Papoutsis finished fourth.
Black River's Morgan Kiss/Aaron Parach were competing in their first
MISSA regatta, but their inexperience did not prove to be a handicap
as they won A division by three points over the New Trier's senior
team of Matt Kopecki and Colleen Cozzens. B division honors went
to Loyola's underclassmen Davis Porter/Juliann Sargis. In second
place was Black River's crew of Alex Kiss and Chloe Beighley followed
by the St Ignatius team of Jenny Zakko, Michael Lee, and Molly Condon.
Separately, Brady Savage of Grosse Pointe North finished first in
the Laser Full Rig high school division and third overall in the
open division. The Laser Radial division was won by Philip Crain
of St John High School located near Houston, Texas. Crain won four
of the nine races. He was followed by Tim Zacher of Culver and William
Haeger of Lake Forest.
Finally, Jimmy Talbot Junior Sailing Perpetual Trophy was awarded
to Philip Crain, the individual (or group of individuals) who demonstrated,
to a truly outstanding degree, sportsmanship and/or performance
during the event.
Thanks go out to Scott Diamond, Joe Quick, and Chicago Yacht Club
for hosting a competitive regatta in which twenty three HS 420 and
nine Laser races were completed over two days. The event also included
a Saturday evening dinner and band hosted by CYC. Fifteen Laser
Radial, seven Laser Full Rig, and eighty five 420 sailors competed.
